This scrumptious Banana Nut Bread is so moist with just the right amount of banana flavor, walnuts, and a touch of cinnamon. In about ten minutes, you too, can have this bread prepped and in the oven. It makes the house smell so good, and it tastes better than any bakery loaf. This is one of our favorite classic banana bread recipes with the perfect balance of sweetness and flavors of banana and cinnamon spice.
If you love bananas, you must try my banana fritters, banana milk, banana muffins, or banana cream pie. My husband and daughter just love bananas, so they are a real thing around here.
Why this Banana Bread Works
- This is a tried and true tested recipe that has been in my family for generations. Even Grandma approved of this bread.
- The bread is made with common pantry ingredients.
- With the use of very ripe bananas and nuts, the bread stays moist for days.
How to make Banana Nut Bread
Start by whisking the flour, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and salt together in a large mixing bowl. Then using a stand or hand mixer on medium speed, beat the butter and sugar together until smooth and creamy. Now, turn the mixer to medium-low and beat the eggs in one at a time until incorporated. Then beat in the mashed bananas and vanilla extract. Next, turn the mixer to low or stir and add the flour mixture to the wet mixture beating just until incorporated. Use a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Do not overmix the batter. Remove from the mixer and fold in the nuts. Remember, do not overmix.
Pour into a loaf pan that has been greased or sprayed with nonstick baking spray. Sprinkle a little bit more chopped nuts on the top. Bake for about 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted in the top comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Once completely cool, store in a larger zipper bag or wrap with plastic wrap and store on the countertop for about 3-4 days.
Banana Nut Bread Ingredients
This recipe calls for ripe bananas. Remember to plan that out early, as most stores do not sell over-ripe bananas. The riper the banana, the better. For best results, the skins should be black or at least have black and brown streaks.
Use chopped walnuts, pecans, almonds, or pistachios to keep the bread moist and flavorful.
Recipe Tips
- Use very ripe bananas and mash them with a fork. The riper the bananas, the naturally sweeter and more moist the bread will be.
- Pecans can be substituted for walnuts.
- Do not overmix the bread, as this can make the loaf tough. The mixer should be on low when the flour mixture is incorporated and should only be mixed until combined.
- For a change of flavor, add 1 cup chocolate chips, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, or 2/3 cup raisins.
- Start checking the loaf after 50 minutes. The loaf is done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool fully before wrapping. Store wrapped in plastic wrap or in a Ziploc storage bag on the counter for up to 4 days.
How to store Banana Nut Bread
The very best way to store banana bread is to wrap it with plastic wrap and store it in a Ziploc storage bag right on your kitchen counter. At room temperature, the bread will remain moist and taste very similar to the day that you baked it. Make sure you remove as much of the excess air from the storage bag every time you open it.
You can prolong the shelf life of the bread by wrapping and storing it in the refrigerator, although the cold from the refrigerator will dry the bread out some. Be sure to wrap it well with plastic wrap and a Ziploc storage bag. The bread will last about one week in the refrigerator.
For longer storage, freeze the bread. Banana bread freezes extremely well. Wrap in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil and place it in a heavy-duty freezer bag removing as much of the air as possible. Freeze for up to three months. To thaw, simply place it on the counter overnight. You can even freeze individual slices in quart-size heavy-duty freezer bags.

I own a Cafe’ in a very small town and last week (during the freeze) I had several ripened bananas and time on my hand, so I searched for a recipe and stumbled across one that proved to be without a doubt, the BEST BANANA NUT BREAD ever!! I ventured to try a variation you suggested by throwing in a handful of chocolate chips and OMG it was the best decision I’ve made this year! As soon as the first slice went out, it was continuous orders til completely gone (quadrupled the recipe). Let me remind you this is a small town, the next morning I received calls asking if we had any of that banana bread they had heard about left. I made this the first time crossing part of the south Pacific Ocean on our sailing vessel Gone Bambu. This recipe is so forgiving, wonderfully aromatic and tasty. It made a beautiful loaf even though I didn’t read all the instructions and put all the ingredients in one bowl at the same time. The second time I made it, again while sailing through Fiji, my baking dish was sliding around in the oven. It was still beautiful and delicious.
Beth Pierce
That is great. I love to hear about your sailing adventures. What fun! So glad that you like the banana nut bread!
Kyndal

HI Beth,
Would it be possible to substitute Stevia for the sugar and if so, a) how much should I use, and b) would anything about the instructions or cook time change?

I am sorry I do not have much experience with stevia. Maybe the readers do and they will respond.

I love to repurpose things, including food! I found this recipe very easy to put together. I love the taste of vanilla so I added a bit more. Only had two bananas so I tweaked the recipe and added a little bit of applesauce. I loved the suggestion to add raisins which just gave it that extra pop of flavor and sweetness. I will be adding this recipe to my list of faves. Thanks for sharing!

Hello I am trying to reduce our sugar intake. This recipe calls for 3/4 cup of sugar. Do you have a suggested reduced amount of sugar that I can use and this still “taste good”? I have tried sugar alternatives and do not like them.
Beth Pierce
I would reduce it to 1/2 cup and then go from there. If it is still yummy, try 1/3 cup.
Dan Gaiser
Try Monkfruit

First and foremost, Happy Holidays !! I LOVE this recipe! I am pretty old school and have recently discovered the world of silicone bakeware!! So I was wondering could you give any suggestions on using silicone bakeware not in a loaf form but in a square 8×8 form. I can’t locate my loaf pan (we’ve recently moved) . Would an 8×8 square silicone pan do ok? Or should I keep searching? With Christmas and family in town I would really like to see if I could just do this in the pan that I currently have. Thank you so very much for all of the wonderful recipes that you make available to for us.
Beth Pierce
Yes, I think you could, but cooking time would be greatly reduced. I would start checking after 20-25 minutes. Merry Christmas!
Diane
Trevor Noah just did a monologue about supply chain with a dig at food waste using the banana. Welp, I wasn’t gonna toss my one super ripe ‘nanner after that pointed comment! Yours was the first banana nut recipe to pop up, it looked delicious and seemed easy enough to halve to fit my one banana and a 6 x 3 1/2 inch loaf pan.
I had one problem: my lone banana was barely 2/3 cup mashed and I needed 1 cup…for flavor but especially for the moisture factor. I decided to use a table spoon of canola oil to add the extra moisture and I’m VERY happy to report that the bread had fine banana flavor and was super moist on the inside with a beautiful crunch on the top edges.
Thanks so much Beth!
Beth Pierce
The pleasure is all mine! So glad that it worked out.
Maritsa Villegas
Hello, did you change the recipe bc I remember it having buttermilk and brown sugar in it and I made this not to long ago and I used this exact recipe but I noticed those two things were missing?
Beth Pierce
No, I have not changed that recipe.

Janice
I discovered this banana bread recipe a couple of weeks ago and I’m so glad I did, as it will now be my “go to” recipe. I’ve baked banana bread over the years using various recipes. When my husband tasted the banana bread baked from this recipe, he commented “wow, this is really good bread,” which is not a comment I’ve heard him make with previous banana bread recipes. Actually, he commented how good it was each time he had a slice of the bread. I thought it was delicious too, and it does freeze well. Even after being in the freezer for a week, once defrosted it tasted just like it had been freshly baked. A keeper for sure!
Beth Pierce
Thanks so much, Janice! I am so happy that you and your husband enjoyed it!

This was a very good base recipe to play with. I used Due to my family’s preferences I made som substitutions: 1/2 almond flour and 1/2 cup coconut sugar rather than the amounts here, plus I used 1/2 cup grated carrots as well as 2 med ripe bananas. Also a goof inch of ground cardamom
Because I used the almond flour I also added 1/2 tsp baking powder. And I added pecans as you suggest.
Spectacular results! Thanks for sharing this.
Beth Pierce
You are most welcome! Thanks for the tips!!

Couldn’t find my wife’s old family recipe that we always used so tried this one
Used 1/2 granulated sugar and 1/2 brown sugar.
I’m not the only one in the family that likes banana bread, so made a double batch, used about 12 bananas, and made one loaf nutless, the other a bit heavy on the nuts, and also threw in a handful of dried cranberries. Both loaves came out amazing! This is now our go-to recipe
Beth Pierce
Thanks, Daniel! Great suggestions! I am so glad that you liked it!

Don’t hit me but I used your recipe for the basis of an experiment. I only had half enough bananas. I also had a cup of beet pulp from my juicer and a cup of carrot pulp as well. I was a bit worried they would make it too dry so I compensated by half a cup of molasses. In addition I had juiced some mandarin oranges (Past their prime and with dryer peels). They didn’t produce much juice but created a wonderful thick sludge. I used it as a concentrate to add to sparkling water and had some left over. I added about half a cup of this orange juice/sludge to the mix as well.
The experiment was a tremendous success. My bread had additional fiber from the beets and carrots which I otherwise would have discarded. The orange sludge worked great. The taste and consistency were a win. The only thing I might change next time is to add a quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Thanks for the recipe.

That is an interesting loaf that you made there. So glad that it all worked out and tasted good.

The recipe looks really good. I’m just curious why a whole 2 cups of mashed bananas? That would amount to around six bananas. I’ve never made a banana bread with that many bananas in it but heck if it’s good, I’m game. Thank you for the recipe.
Beth Pierce
The number of bananas depends on the size of the bananas. You can always cut it back a little if you feel like that is too much banana but it does make a nice moist loaf.
Nancy

Wheat flour can make baked goods dense. The most I would go with wheat flour is 50/50.

Does scale 1,2,3 mean measurements for the amount you are making? Like amount of breads?

Beth Pierce
I am not sure I have not tried. Maybe one of the readers will know the answer.

I used Arrowroot flour to make it gluten-free. It was moist, almost gooey. But I am in Denver, and I didn’t adjust anything for altitude. I also used Monk Fruit instead of sugar. It was a big hit!
