Brown Sugar Bacon Wrapped Smokies are the perfect bite-size appetizer for game day and holiday parties. Slightly sweet and perfectly poppable, they will please any crowd!

Ingredients

  • 1 package smoked cocktail sausages (pork, beef, chicken, or turkey)
  • 1 lb bacon
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • Toothpicks
  • 3/4 cup spicy BBQ sauce (Gates Original Classic works well)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cut the bacon in thirds and wrap each slice around a hotdog and secure it with a toothpick. Place in a large storage container and pour the brown sugar over the top, working it around to coat the hotdogs. Refrigerate for a couple of hours to overnight.
  3. Transfer to a baking sheet and coat with any leftover brown sugar from the bottom of the storage container. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until golden brown, turning halfway through the cooking process.
  4. Mix the BBQ sauce, Dijon mustard, and honey together and serve with the weenies.

Notes

  • For ease in cleaning your baking pan, cover it with aluminum foil.
  • Use good quality bacon and not too thick or too thin.
  • Lil smokies are available in several flavors, including beef, chicken and pork, turkey, and Polish smoked sausage. Our favorite is the chicken and pork, but they all taste good in this recipe.
  • They do not have to sit in the brown sugar mixture overnight, but the longer they sit in the brown sugar, the sweeter the bacon gets.
  • Refrigerate them while they are sitting in the brown sugar.
  • For a little added zest and zing, sprinkle them with a bit of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes before baking.
  • For an over-the-top aroma, add a little real maple syrup to the mix.
  • They are absolutely delicious without any sauce; however, the slightly spicy bbq sauce helps balance the sweet flavor.
  • If planning for a crowd, make a double batch, as they go really fast!
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or in an air fryer.
