An easy-to-make tasty loaf of Italian or French bread topped with garlic butter, mozzarella, cheddar, provolone, and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf crusty Italian or french bread (about 1 lb)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 4 cloves garlic finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (reserve a teaspoon for the top)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil (reserve a teaspoon for the top)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • 2/3 cup shredded cheddar
  • 2/3 cup shredded provolone

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Cut the loaf in half lengthwise. Combine melted butter, minced garlic, 2 teaspoons of parsley, 2 teaspoons of basil, and dried oregano. Brush the butter mixture evenly over the bread. Spread each cheese over the top making sure to evenly distribute it over the bread. Sprinkle with remaining parsley and basil.
  3. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Turn the broiler on for the last minute of cooking to lightly brown the top. Stay close as broilers are unpredictable.

Notes

  • For optimal flavor experiment with different kinds of cheese to find the combination that fits your taste buds best.
  • Turn the broiler on low for the last 1-2 minutes of baking to lightly brown the top.  Stay close by as broilers are unpredictable.
  • For softer bread (we like ours with crispy crusts) wrap in a loose foil tent while baking.  Open up the foil for the last few minutes of baking to lightly brown.
  • Wait 2-3 minutes after baking before slicing the bread so the cheese does not slide quite as much.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat in a foil tent in the oven or in the microwave at reduced power
