Whisk the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.

Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Blend in the molasses, add the egg, vanilla, and flour.

Cover and refrigerate. Preheat the oven and cover the baking sheet with parchment paper.

Put sugar in a small bowl. Using your hands, roll the dough into balls. And gently roll the balls in the sugar. Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake.
