Ingredients

  • coarsely ground kosher salt
  • 1 cup fresh grapefruit juice
  • 3/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 cup triple sec or Cointreau
  • 1/2 cup blanco tequila
  • Ice
  • Lime wedges or slices
  • Grapefruit wedges or slices
  • Optional 2-3 tablespoons simple syrup or agave nectar.

Instructions

  • Rub a lime wedge around the edge of each glass and then dip the rim of each glass lightly on a small plate of coarsely ground kosher salt.
  • In a small pitcher mix together the grapefruit juice, lime juice, triple sec, tequila and ice. Stir to combine. If desired sweeten to taste with simple syrup or agave nectar. Pour into glasses filled with ice and garnish with a lime and grapefruit wedge.

Notes

  • I find this cocktail perfect without added sugar but everyone's taste is different especially when it comes to grapefruit.  If it is too tart for you adjust the sweetness by adding a few tablespoons of simple syrup or agave nectar. Or choose a pink grapefruit juice which is a little sweeter.
  • Simple syrup is made by combining equal amounts of water and sugar in a microwaveable measuring cup or bowl.  Microwave for 30 second increments until the sugar is completely dissolved. Or you can substitute agave syrup.
  • Simple syrup can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one month.
  • Banco Tequila, also called silver tequila and white tequila is the way to go with this cocktail. You can use gold tequila but the white tequila pairs better with the grapefruit.
  • You can use any kind of orange liqueur for this recipe. Grand Marnier, Triple Sec, and Cointreau all work well with Triple Sec being the most budget friendly.
