Apple Dumplings

Sweet Apple Dumplings made easy with refrigerated crescent roll dough cooked in a cinnamon butter caramel glaze.  Make some for your family today and enjoy them with fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter 2 sticks
  • 2 Honeycrisp apples peeled cored and cut in 8 wedges
  • 2 8 ounce cans refrigerated Crescent Roll Dough
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup lemon-lime soda see notes

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease the baking dish with butter.
  • Wrap apple wedges in crescent rolls starting at the wider end.  Place in prepared baking dish.
  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.   Whisk in brown sugar and cinnamon; cook for 1-2 minutes.  Remove from the heat and whisk in the vanilla, being very careful as it will bubble up.
  • Pour the mixture over and around the dumplings.  Pour the lemon-lime soda around and between the dumplings without pouring over them.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the dumplings are golden brown.

Notes

  • My go to apples for this recipe are crisp tart apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. Other good choices are Braeburn or Pink Lady (also known as Cripps Pink).
  • We love cinnamon here; however, you should adjust the cinnamon to your taste.
  • Feel free to add more spices in small quantities like 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, ground cloves, nutmeg or allspice.
  • Any lemon lime soda will work like Mountain Dew, Sprite, 7up or ginger ale.
  • Don't pour the soda over the crescent rolls just in and around them.
  • When serving spoon some of the sweet sauce over the delicious dumplings.
  • Store covered in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 24 hours.  After that store covered in the fridge for up to 4 days
