Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 8 large crisp tart apples like Granny Smith or Honey Crisp peeled, cored, and cubed
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Grease a 9x9 inch baking dish or equivalent.
  • First in a large bowl combine the apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir gently to combine and then spoon the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish in an even layer.
  • In a medium bowl stir together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Slowly stir in the melted butter with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown. If the mixture browns too fast simply cover with a loose piece of aluminum foil. Let the dish sit for 15-20 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For best results use old-fashioned rolled oats for a nutty flavor (without the nuts) more texture, and larger crumbles.
  • I like to use Granny Smith apples because of their tart flavor and firm texture but there are lots of great baking apples to choose from. See below for more apple choices.
  • Cube the apples into about 3/4 inch cubes give or take a little bit.
  • Serve this dish warm, room temperature, or cold. It really is a matter of personal preference.
  • Once the dish has completely cooled store the crumble covered on the counter at room temperature for up to 2 days. You do not have to refrigerate your apple crumble if you are going to consume it within 2 days. After 2 days move it to the refrigerator for up to 2 more days for a total of 4 days of consumption time.
