A deliciously easy Apple Crumble with chunks of tart apples combined with cinnamon and nutmeg and topped with a crisp brown sugar and cinnamon oat crumb topping. This recipe brings all the delicious flavors of fall together in one scrumptious dessert dish with just the right balance of spices. It’s so much easier than rolling out a pie crust and just as delicious.
For a little piece of heaven, serve it warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce. If you like this recipe, try my Dutch Apple Pie or Apple Brown Betty.
How to make Apple Crumble
See the recipe card below for the complete ingredient list and recipe instructions.
First in a large bowl, toss the apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir gently to combine, and then spoon the apple mixture into a baking dish.
Now in a medium bowl, stir together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Slowly stir in the melted butter with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples.
Bake in a preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown. If the mixture browns too fast, simply cover it with a loose piece of aluminum foil. Let the dish sit for 15-20 minutes before serving.
Helpful recipe tips
- For best results, use old-fashioned rolled oats for a nutty flavor (without the nuts), more texture, and larger crumbles.
- I like to use Granny Smith apples because of their tart flavor and firm texture, but there are lots of great baking apples to choose from. See below for more apple choices.
- Cube the apples into about 1/2 inch cubes, give or take a little bit. Or slice into 1/2-inch thick pieces.
- Serve this dish warm, room temperature, or cold. It really is a matter of personal preference.
- For more protein, add 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping.
- Once the dish has completely cooled, store the crumble covered on the counter at room temperature for up to 2 days. You do not have to refrigerate your apple crumble if you are going to consume it within 2 days. After 2 days, move it to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 2 more days for a total of 4 days of consumption time.
- Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
Best apples for apple crumble
My go-to apples for this recipe are crisp apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples. Other good choices are Braeburn or Pink Lady (also known as Cripps Pink). You can also do a mixture of all of these or any of these for more texture and flavor. Peel and cut your apples into chunks that are 3/4 inch thick to help keep a little bit of firmness through the baking process. For best results, stir them with a little lemon juice to keep them from browning while you are making your way through the recipe.
