Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 8 large crisp tart apples like Granny Smith or Honey Crisp peeled, cored, and cubed
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Grease a 9x9 inch baking dish or equivalent.
  • First in a large bowl combine the apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir gently to combine and then spoon the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish in an even layer.
  • In a medium bowl stir together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Slowly stir in the melted butter with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown. If the mixture browns too fast simply cover with a loose piece of aluminum foil. Let the dish sit for 15-20 minutes before serving.

Notes

To freeze, first cool to room temperature. Cover with 2 layers of plastic wrap, followed by a layer of aluminum foil, or spoon into a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat in the oven in the casserole dish covered with aluminum foil at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until warm.
