This classic Egg in a Hole recipe is the perfect quick morning breakfast or lunch. It takes less than 5 minutes to make and is customizable to how you like your eggs cooked. Cook them in a skillet or make a whole sheet pan of them in the oven.

How to Make an Egg in a Hole
This is a summary version; for the complete list of ingredients and instructions, please refer to the recipe card below.
- Butter both sides of a slice of bread. Using a biscuit cutter, cut a hole in the bread.
- In a skillet over medium heat, add the bread to the pan and crack the egg into the hole. Cook just until set enough to flip.
What Can I Add to an Egg in a Hole
- Fresh sliced tomatoes
- Crisp chopped bacon
- Creamy avocado
- Pickled jalapenos
- Sautéed mushrooms and onions
- Steamed asparagus
- Shredded cheese
- Smoked salmon
- Chopped green onion

Preparation Tips
- Plan accordingly and remove the butter from the refrigerator. Soft butter is much easier to spread without tearing the bread up.
- Use biscuit cutters or cookie cutters to cut the holes in the bread. I use my 2½-inch biscuit cutter. Or have fun by using different-shaped cookie cutters, like a heart, star, flower, or diamond.
- Garnish with fresh herbs. Parsley, cilantro, chives, thyme, rosemary, and even dill taste delicious with eggs.
- Spice it up with a little Cajun seasoning, cayenne pepper, or seasoned salt.
- This recipe is written for 1 egg in a hole, but you can make as many as you want by multiplying the ingredients.

How to Make It for a Crowd
- Cover a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Grease the top of the parchment paper or spray it with nonstick cooking spray.
- Butter one side of the bread and use a biscuit cutter to cut a hole in each slice.
- Place the bread, butter side down, and add an egg in each hole. Sprinkle with salt, ground black pepper, and other seasonings that you desire.
- Bake at 400 degrees for 7-10 minutes or until the desired doneness.
- Sprinkle with fresh herbs or Parmesan cheese and serve.

Egg in a Hole Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 slice bread
- 1 tablespoon butter softened
- 1 large egg
- Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper
- Sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley or chives
Instructions
- Butter both sides of the bread. Using a biscuit cutter, cut a hole in the center of the bread slice, but don't discard the center.
- Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the bread to the pan and crack the egg right into the hole. Add the hole that you cut out to the skillet. Cook the slice with egg in it just until it's set enough to flip. Carefully flip and cook the egg until your desired doneness. Flip the bread circle and cook until golden brown.
- Remove both from the pan. Sprinkle with kosher salt, fresh ground black pepper, and a little sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley or chives.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or in the microwave at reduced power, but keep in mind that eggs are never as good reheated.

Using a biscuit cutter is a clever way to get that perfectly round hole for the egg. My family always fights over the buttery little toast circles you cut out from the middle.

My kids love an egg. I hadn’t done it like this before, they normally have the egg on top of the toast – so this made a really nice change to have the egg a different way!
