Ingredient Substitutions and Notes
See the complete list of ingredients on the recipe card below.
- Frozen fries: I use crinkle fries, but you can use any frozen fries. Waffle fries are also great.
- Ground beef: Use ground chuck or ground beef with some fat, like 85/15 (85% lean, 15% fat).
- Taco seasoning: I use Spice Islands from Costco or homemade taco seasoning.
- American cheese: Purchase good-quality American cheese from your grocery deli counter for optimal flavor. It does make a difference. Don’t use prepackaged, individually wrapped cheese or pre-shredded cheese.
- Milk: Whole or 2% milk

How To Make Nacho Fries
This is a summary version; for the complete list of ingredients and instructions, please refer to the recipe card below.
- Brown the ground beef. About halfway through the browning process, add the chopped onion. Cook until the onions are soft and the beef is browned.
- Stir in the taco seasoning and water. Simmer until thickened.
- Meanwhile, bake the frozen fries until crispy.
- Combine the cheese and milk in a microwavable bowl. Microwave at 50% power for 2-minute intervals, whisking between each interval.
- Assemble the nacho fries. Divide the fries among the plates. Top with the seasoned beef, cheese sauce, tomatoes, green onions, jalapeños, and sour cream.

Cook’s Preparation Tips
- I like to cook the fries in a convection oven for extra crispiness.
- If the seasoned beef gets too dry, add a couple of tablespoons of water.
- Assemble the fries right before serving. Reheat the seasoned ground beef in the microwave. Reheat the cheese sauce in the microwave for short intervals until melted and smooth.
- If you think jalapeños are too spicy, try pickled jalapeños. These milder, sweeter jalapeños are delicious on these nachos.
