This apple tart brings all the delicious tastes of fall together easily using frozen puff pastry and a couple of simple tricks. So tasty and simple, yet everyone will think you’ve invested hours into making it.

I love baking this time of year; it is apple season, after all. Why not enjoy some of nature’s bounty? If you like apples as much as we do, try baked apples, apple crisp, and apple turnovers.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
See the complete list of ingredients below on the recipe card.
- Puff pastry: This is a frozen, ready-made pastry dough that is buttery, flaky, and light. The butter is worked inside the dough, folded, and rolled out multiple times before freezing, creating light, delicious layers. It is available in the freezer section of most grocery stores in the United States.
- Jam: Apricot or peach jam. You can use apple jam, but I like the contrasting flavors.
- Apples: Granny Smith Apple, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Cosmic Crisp, and Pink Lady are great baking apples.
- Butter: unsalted or salted
How To Make Apple Tart
This is a summary version; for the complete list of ingredients and instructions, please refer to the recipe card below.
- Gently roll out the puff pastry on a piece of parchment paper. Spread the jam over the top, leaving a small border around the edge (an inch or less).
- Arrange the cut apples over the jam.
- Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl. In another small bowl, whisk the egg and water together.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture over the apples and brush the edges of the puff pastry with the egg wash.
- Dot the top with small butter cubes and bake until golden brown on the edges.

Preparation Tips
- Peel the apples and cut the flesh off the core into four chunks. Using a sharp knife, cut the apple into slices without changing their position. This makes it easy to arrange them in groups over the tart.
- Thaw the puff pastry in the fridge overnight. It is very important to work with the puff pastry while it is still chilled.
- Gently roll the puff pastry into a 10×10-inch square.
- Store the apple tart in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
