Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
See the complete list of ingredients on the recipe card below.
- Italian sausages: We love Johnsonville Italian sausage. They are available in sweet, mild, and hot.
- Bell pepper: You can use any color bell pepper. I love the flavor and color contrast between red and green bell peppers.
- Dried Italian seasoning: Dried or fresh herbs like thyme, rosemary, basil, and parsley
- Marinara sauce: I like Rao’s and Kirkland Organic Marinara, but you can use your favorite brand. If you have time, make homemade marinara sauce.
- Cheese: You can use any Italian cheeses that melt well, such as Mozzarella, Provolone, Provel, or Fontina.
- Hoagie rolls: Also known as sub rolls. You can substitute French baguettes.
How To Make Italian Sausage Sandwiches
This is a summary version; for the complete list of ingredients and instructions, please refer to the recipe card below.
- Brown the sausage in a skillet over medium heat. Plate the sausages and cover to keep warm.
- Add the bell pepper and onions. Cook the onions and bell peppers until soft and lightly browned on the edges.
- Butter the buns and toast them in a skillet.
- Assemble the sandwiches by adding a sausage to each toasted bun, then layer with the marinara sauce, cooked bell peppers and onions, and shredded mozzarella.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and place it in the oven. Bake for about 10 minutes.

Preparation Tips
- Don’t overcook the bell peppers and onions. They are better when they are not too soft.
- Butter the buns before you toast them! You can use unsalted or salted butter. It adds a lot of flavor, and if you have time, rub them with a garlic clove.
- These are best eaten after preparation, but you can gently reheat them in the microwave at reduced power.

What To Serve With Italian Sausage Sandwiches
- Soup: chickpea soup, cabbage soup, or 15 bean soup.
- Salad: corn salad, tomato salad, or seven-layer salad
- Potatoes: air fryer potato wedges, Potatoes O’Brien, or red potato salad

The males in this house are very picky. They’ve been ho-hum about all of the sandwiches I’ve made them. Once I presented them with this Italian sandwich, I almost got a standing ovation. They would have stood, but they were too busy eating. I’m making this again SOON!

So happy that they liked the sandwiches!
