Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
See the complete list of ingredients below on the recipe card.
- Apples: My favorites are Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Pink Lady, Gala, and Granny Smith. Include a variety of those, and you can’t go wrong.
- Spices: Cinnamon and nutmeg are the main spices, but you can add a few pinches of ground cloves, allspice, or ginger.
- Butter: Unsalted or salted. If using salted butter, reduce the added salt by 1/4 teaspoon.
- Milk: Preferably whole or 2%
- Vanilla extract: For the best flavor, please use the real thing.

How to Make Apple Cobbler
This is the summary version; see the recipe card below for the complete list of ingredients and the instructions.
First, combine the apple slices, lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Toss to coat and set aside. Melt the butter in the baking dish in the oven. Grab a medium bowl and whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together. Stir the milk and vanilla into the flour mixture. Pour the batter over the melted butter and top with the apple mixture.
Bake in a preheated oven for about 50 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm or cold with fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. It is just that simple to make this fantastic dessert treat!
Preparation Tips
- The best apples for this recipe are Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Pink Lady, Gala, and Granny Smith.
- It is best to peel the apples for this dessert. Some apple skins can be thick and tough, which I don’t want in my dessert.
- Top the cobbler with fresh whipped cream, a vanilla ice cream scoop, or a caramel sauce drizzle.

Change It Up
Are you in the mood for a peach cobbler? You can substitute for all or some of the apples and make a mixed fruit cobbler. The possibilities are endless and only limited by your imagination.
- Apricot
- Blueberry
- Blackberry
- Peach
- Plum
- Cranberry
- Cherry
- Strawberry

Storage and Reheat
Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or the microwave at 60% for 2-minute increments until warm.
To freeze, let it fully cool, then double-wrap it in plastic wrap. Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat in the oven.

I love a good apple cobbler! This was a great fall dessert to make for my family.
Hadley
Apple cobbler really reminds me of fall evenings with my grandma. I use to work at an apple orchard and bring home loads of extra apples, and she always made them into a cobbler! Thank you for sharing your recipe.

My pleasure, Hadley!

Hi
I only gave this a 4 star rating because of some things.
First….it was very, very easy to make
Second….when I sliced the apples, added the lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and set aside, it made too much liquid. Was I to add all of it? Well I did.
Third…since that liquid was added, the cake didn’t bake up as it should have, and the bottom didn’t bake right. It was very wet and moist.
Fourth…cover or don’t cover when cooled? I covered it, and it was way too moist on the bottom. Should have left it off to dry out a bit
Fifth…I used a 13 x 9 aluminum disposable pan because it was to be taken somewhere-but wasn’t as it turned out too soggy.
Sixth…it tasted good, but way too soggy.
Sevrnth….what did I do wrong????
Eight….I will give it a try again, only cut in half, and bake in a glass Pyrex 8″ pan.
Thanks
Evangeline
This is so delicious! The first time I made it exactly as is, but the second time I made some adjustments to get it exactly to my liking. I increased the amount of vanilla and spices just slightly and cooked the apple topping ingredients over the stove until the apples were half way done cooking and added a corn starch slurry to get it like apple pie filling. I then put this partially cooked and thickened filling into the baking dish on the bottom and topped it with the cake batter which included the melted butter mixed into it. It turns out so much better this way in my opinion. It’s a lot juicier and more appealing for the eye as well.
Beth Pierce
Thanks for the tips, Evangeline! I am so glad that you liked it!

This is very good, but I would call it an apple cake. It doesn’t have any of that “apple pie filling” that you find in most cobblers. It’s bread and sliced apples. I will make it again overall.

I’ve tried alot of Apple cobbler recipes but by far this is my favorite. I love the cake like texture mixed in with the apples. This recipe is replacing all the others. Excellent…

I never leave recipe reviews, but I had to make an exception here!! Super easy, delicious. I added about a cup and a half of blueberries also and finished off with a powdered sugar/ milk glaze when it was finished… heavenly!!
Beth Pierce
Thank you, Tyler! I am so glad that you liked it. I love blueberries. I will have to try that.
