Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
See the complete list of ingredients below on the recipe card.
- Apples: Choose crisp, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples. Other good choices are Braeburn or Pink Lady (Cripps Pink).
- Lemon juice: Fresh is best
- Spices: Ground cinnamon and nutmeg, but you can add a pinch or two of ground cloves or allspice if desired.
- Oats: For best results, use old-fashioned rolled oats for a nutty flavor (without the nuts), more texture, and larger crumbles.
- Butter: unsalted. If using salted butter, omit the added salt

How To Make Apple Crumble
See the recipe card below for the complete ingredient list and recipe instructions.
- Toss the apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spoon the apple mixture into a baking dish.
- Stir the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Slowly stir in the melted butter with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples.
- Bake in a preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.

Preparation Tips
- Cube the apples into about ½-inch cubes, give or take a little bit, or slice into ½-inch thick pieces.
- Serve this dish warm, room temperature, or cold. It is a matter of personal preference.
- Add ¾ cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping for more protein.

Store and Reheat
Once the dish has completely cooled, store the crumble covered on the counter at room temperature for up to 2 days. You do not have to refrigerate your apple crumble if you consume it within 2 days.
After 2 days, move it to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 2 more days for a total of 4 days of consumption time. Reheat in the microwave at 60-70% for 2-3 minutes or until warm.
