Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
See the complete list of ingredients below on the recipe card.
- Ground beef: Use ground beef with a little fat in it. Fat is what gives the beef flavor.
- Ground sausage: You can use either bulk sausage like Jimmy Dean’s All Natural or Country Mild or Italian sausage.
- Butter: unsalted or salted
- Marjoram: You can substitute oregano for the marjoram, but you should treat yourself if you have never cooked with marjoram. With a woodsy citrus aroma, Marjoram is less pungent, milder, and sweeter.
- Marinara: You can substitute pizza sauce for marinara sauce. Marinara is a little thinner than pizza sauce, so I simmer it for a few minutes to thicken it and let all the flavors meld together.
- English muffins: You can substitute hamburger buns for the English muffins but toast them. The bottom buns are ideal because they are flat, but you can make the top buns work by slicing off a little bit of the crown so they sit flat.
- Mozzarella cheese: You can substitute an Italian blend cheese.

How to Make Pizza Burgers
This is the summary version; see the recipe card below for the complete list of ingredients and the instructions.
Start by browning the ground beef and sausage. About halfway through the browning process, toss in the butter, onion, and mushrooms. Cook until the meat and mushrooms are browned and the onions are soft. Then, turn the heat to medium-low. Add the garlic and marjoram, cooking for 1 minute while stirring constantly. Stir in the marinara or pizza sauce. Continue simmering for about 7-10 minutes.
Meanwhile, split and toast the English muffins under the oven broiler. Now, divide the meat mixture evenly over the toasted muffins. Top with the diced pepperoni and mozzarella. Place under the broiler for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese melts.
Preparation Tips
- Stack the pepperoni and slice it in halves or quarters. Add as little or as much as you like.
- Toast the English muffins before spooning on the meat mixture. This will help prevent them from getting soggy.
- Parchment paper can catch fire, so it is best to use aluminum foil under the broiler.

Recipe Variations and Additions
- Meat: use all ground beef, all Italian sausage, ground pork, ground turkey, ground chicken, or any combination of these.
- Veggies: add tomatoes, bell peppers, banana peppers, jalapenos, or black olives.
- Spice it up: add jalapeno rings, crushed red pepper, cayenne pepper, or chipotle peppers with adobo sauce to the meat mixture.
- Alfredo Sauce: for a unique taste, swap out homemade or jarred Alfredo sauce for the marinara sauce in this recipe.
