This glazed Ham Steak Recipe with Brown Sugar Glaze is a fresh change from the standard grilled fare. The ham steak is glazed with an easy four-ingredient brown sugar honey mustard sauce that will leave you longing for more.
Ham Steak with Honey Mustard Glaze
I like to prepare this recipe on the grill, but you could do it in a large skillet or under the broiler. Read more below on how to do that. This recipe is perfect for small families or couples who love ham but do not want to bake a whole ham. Sometimes, those whole hams can lead to days and days of eating ham. This is an easy, quick, and delicious alternative.
What is Ham Steak?
A ham steak is just a slice of ham from a whole ham roast. It is perfect for small families, couples, and when you may need a small amount of ham for a recipe. You can find them in your local grocery store beside the packaged smoked whole hams and other pork cuts.
How to make brown sugar ham steak
First, preheat your grill to medium heat or about 350 degrees. In a small pan over low heat, combine the brown sugar, honey, Dijon mustard, and apple cider vinegar. Simmer over low heat until the brown sugar is dissolved.
Add the steak to the grill over direct heat and baste the top with the honey mustard glaze. Once basted, flip and baste the other side. Close the lid and cook for about 4 minutes. While the steak is cooking, take a few quick peeks and ensure the fire is not flaring up. Now flip once again and baste the top. Again, close the lid and cook for about 4 minutes.
Pro Tips
- The ham steaks cut with bone-in are the most tender and have the best flavor.
- You can substitute pure maple syrup for the honey.
- Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste, but easy on the salt because ham is cured with salt.
- Keep an eye on the grill to avoid any flare-ups.
- Leftovers are great in soup recipes like Split Pea Soup Recipe and Ham and Bean Soup.
- Store leftovers in a large zipper bag or airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave at reduced power for short increments until warm.
How to Cook Ham Steak in a Skillet
Add a little butter to a large skillet over medium heat. Then add the ham steak and cook for about 3 minutes while basting the top with the brown sugar glaze. Then flip the ham and cook for about 3 minutes while basting the top. Now flip the ham and cook for about 3 more minutes while basting that side again.
How to cook Ham Steak under a Broiler
To cook under the broiler, place the ham steak on an oven-safe rack over an aluminum foil-covered baking sheet. Brush the glaze mixture on the top and place the ham steak under the broiler on low about 3-4 inches from the heat source. Broil for about 3-5 minutes or until the glaze is bubbly and lightly browned. Then, flip the ham steak and brush the other side with the glaze. Broil for another 3-5 minutes or until browned.
What to Serve With It
For a full ham steak dinner, enjoy it with any number of side dishes, such as mac and cheese, Southern potato salad, deviled eggs, fried potatoes, cheesy cauliflower and broccoli casserole, homemade biscuits, baked beans, breakfast casserole, Southern green beans, or fried apples.

Yes you most certainly can. Put the ham steak on a broiler pan and place several inches under the broiler. Broil on low for about 6-8 minutes each side basting several times. Keep a close eye on it because most broilers are unpredictable.
