It is ideal for game day and movie night. For an over-the-top meal, serve it with crock pot chicken tacos, breakfast tacos, and chile relleno casserole.

This best-tasting guacamole is incredibly easy to make and much better than store-bought. This homemade version is the way to go with fresh, wholesome ingredients and no preservatives! Serve it with homemade tortilla chips or wonton chips!
Ingredients Needed
- Avocados: please see more below about choosing ripe avocados
- A lime: for zest and juice
- Red onion: finely diced
- Garlic: fresh, of course
- Jalapeno: Wear gloves and do not touch your face when working with jalapenos. Wash up thoroughly after finishing.
- Cilantro: fresh is best
- Seasonings: salt and freshly ground black pepper
- Roma tomatoes: optional
How To Choose Ripe Avocados
For ripe, ready-to-eat avocados, look for dark green to nearly black skin. The flesh should yield slightly to gentle yet firm pressure but not feel mushy. A dark black mushy avocado is overripe. If you pop the stem off with your thumb, you should see a nice green spot, indicating a healthy avocado, but if you see a black moldy spot, the avocado is overripe.
How To Make Guacamole
Mash the avocados, lime juice, and lime zest with a potato masher or fork. Add the red onion, garlic, jalapeno, cilantro, and, if desired, tomato. Stir to combine. Season it with salt and pepper to taste.

If not serving shortly, spoon the guacamole into an airtight container and level it off with a spoon. Pour a thin layer of lime juice over the top. Cover the dish with a sealed lid and place it in the fridge. Before serving, pour off the lime juice and stir to combine.

Preparation Tips
- Please wait until you have cut the veggies and chopped the cilantro before you cut your avocadoes, as they brown quickly. If you forget, brush the exposed flesh with lime juice.
- When working with jalapenos, wear gloves and do not touch your face. Wash up thoroughly after finishing.
- Tomatoes are optional in this recipe. If you use tomato, choose a meaty tomato like Roma tomatoes or part of a beefsteak tomato.

Store Guacamole Airtight
Serve guacamole within a couple of hours of being prepared. If you must prepare it several hours before, spoon the guacamole into an airtight container and level it off with a spoon. Pour a thin layer of lime juice over the top. Cover the dish with a sealed lid and place it in the fridge. Before serving, pour off the lime juice and stir to combine.
How To Make Guac With A Mortar And Pestle
Add the red onion, garlic, jalapeno, cilantro, and a little salt to the bowl. Use the pestle to crush it against the mortar. This helps release the juices, oil, and flavor.
Then, add the avocadoes, lime juice, and zest and mash to desired consistency. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. If using tomatoes, stir them in.
Serving Suggestions
Serve it with the usual suspects, such as tortilla chips, pita chips, Fritos, whole grain crackers, or seed crackers. Healthy alternatives include celery sticks, carrot sticks, and cucumber rounds.
Other choices include burritos, quesadillas, ground beef tacos, Dortios casserole, taco salad, walking tacos, and taco stuffed shells.
